Driving to hotel Mystica
Mystica is a lovely hotel on the far side of lake Arenal. Getting here was very easy, even with my standard car. Route 142 which goes completely around lake Arenal and connects you to La Fortuna is well paved. The road up the hill is only 300 meters and a very easy grade and well maintained.
You can find out more about road conditions in Costa Rica here.
Checking into hotel Mystica
Checking into Mystica was an easy and relaxing experience. One of the staff helped me with my bags and gave me a full rundown of everything offered on the property.
The Room at hotel Mystica
I was lucky enough to receive an upgrade from the main lodge into a private villa. The villa was quite beautiful with a large glass wall that looked out over the lake and (on a clear day) Volcano Arenal. One morning, I even watched a magnificent sunrise from bed. My villa came with a kitchen, a large king bed, a pullout trundle bed as well as a day bed. The bathroom was spacious with a large walk in shower and waterfall shower head. There was an outdoor shower as well in my backyard.
Although there is no A/C in any of the rooms at Hotel Mystica the climate on that side of the lake is quite nice. Situated up on a hill, the breeze is constant and cooling. The overhead fan was more than enough to keep me comfortable at night and I even had to turn it off one night as I was too cold.
At night, the monkeys (and other wildlife) are very loud and sometimes feel as if they were right on top of my roof. I had no problem with this and found it amazing to be so close to nature but other guests did say they had trouble sleeping.
Wifi at Hotel Mystica
Wifi is available only in the lobby and restaurant at Hotel Mystica. I found connection speeds to be fast and reliable.
Extra Touches at Hotel Mystica
The hotel is very committed to bringing you into a zen state of mind and that is apparent from the decorations in the main hotel to the murals in the villas. My favorite extra touch was the bathing meditation card. The views at sunrise are fantastic especially if you get lucky and get a clear morning.
Dining at Hotel Mystica
A nice spread of coffee, juice, water, bread and fruit is set up and available starting around 6:30 AM. As an extremely early riser, (I am up with the birds around 5:30) I do wish that a simple coffee pot was put out a bit earlier. Breakfast is included and cooked to order starting around 7 AM.
I never had lunch at Mystica, but heard good things. Dinner was a bit expensive with pizzas between $10-$12 and mains up to $19. I had the pizza on my first night and couldn’t get over how good it was! Guess it was worth the price! Also, the pizza being so good may have something to do with one of the owners being from Italy…
My one complaint about dining at Hotel Mystica were the children running around at dinner time. I will admit, I am not a kid person but other guests were giving them looks as well. It was hard to enjoy my pizza and some quiet time with the two children yelling, running and wrestling on the hardwood floor. I understand this is a family run hotel but found them to be very disruptive. I ended up not eating a full meal at Mystica the second night because of them.
Onsite extras at Hotel Mystica
The pool at Mystica used natural water but was built into the ground for a more relaxing experience.
The yoga center and meditation garden is also a great addition to the property. There are complimentary mats at the yoga center and during one yoga class I spotted a toucan while in downward dog. Talk about magical!! Upon booking, I would inquire about yoga retreats happening on the property and ask if you can participate.
There is also a sauna on the property at Hotel Mystica that everyone was raving about – unfortunately I didn’t have the time to try it.
Final Thoughts for Hotel Mystica in Arenal Costa Rica
A gorgeous hotel that will bring you closer to yourself and nature at every turn. A great stay for yogis and any one who wants to try out meditation. Only con is how far away it is from the main attractions in Arenal: Arenal Volcano, various hot springs and La Fortuna Waterfall.
