Last thing, before I start detailing the spots, don’t forget to pack your tripod, DSLR Camera, and remote clicker for the journey! If you want to read more about what camera equipment I pack for every trip, check out this article.

Great Ocean Road & 12 Apostles

Let's start with the obvious, the 12 Apostles and Melbourne’s Great Ocean Road. I have a couple of long articles that break down everything for planning a trip on the Great Ocean Road.

This is one of the most photographed attractions, and it is actually outside of Melbourne. No doubt you have seen pictures of the 12 Apostles on Instagram, the place is famous and for good reason. You can join many day trips and group tours to visit the Great Ocean Road and 12 Apostles but I beg you to take your time and do the trip over a couple of days.

Street Art: Especially Hosier Lane

Street Art Instagram Photo Ideas while in Melbourne

There are tons of places around the city to grab a grungy Insta photo with fabulous street art but Hosier Lane was my favorite. Even the garbage cans are covered in paint which means you can find a good spot even if it's busy.

St Kilda

You have a variety of options in St Kilda for a killer Instagram photo. Choose from the beach, pier, and especially don't miss Luna Park. The pier's history began in 1853, and a stroll along the water will take you down memory lane. Furthest down the pier, you may even be able to spot some penguins.

Luna Park

Located in St Kilda the entrance to Luna Park is also a great Instagram shot. You'll find nearly identical entranceways for Luna Park in both Melbourne and Sydney. The iconic gaping mouth is creepy and fun at the same time and the uniqueness of it will stop any mindless Instagram scroller in their tracks.

National Gallery of Victoria

The best Instagram spot in Melbournes sprawling library requires you to look up. The ceiling right inside the grand entrance, constructed by Leonard French, is stunning but difficult to capture. Regardless, it is beautiful to see in person and admission to the museum is always free. The courtyard out back has some great spots of Instagram photos as well. Take a look through the free galleries for some idea spots while taking in some remarkable art.

State Library of Victoria

I begged you in this article on the best things to do in Melbourne to not miss the gorgeous state library and especially the dome-topped La Trobe Reading Room. The octagonal shape is a thing of beauty. I suggest heading up to the top floors and trying an overhead shot similar to what I did. But don't stop there. The 150-year old library is filled with plenty of other rooms to explore and get great shots.

Flinders Street Station

One of the city’s busiest hubs you may have to be extra patient to grab a great shot here. But you will be rewarded, especially if you frame its glorious domed roof and bright yellow paint behind you. Pick colors to accent those walls and you are set.

Block Arcade & Royal Arcade

Both of these grand old arcades (the Royal Arcade was built in 1869 and Block was built in 1891) are an Instagrammer's dream. With embellished tiling, tall intricate arches, and great soft lighting for the perfect picture it's hard to go wrong here. Make sure to dress fashion forward and arrive early before the crowds come to get the ideal shot.

Royal Botanic Gardens

It's hard to go wrong in a garden. The Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne have every type of ecosystem. From quiet lakes to dense rainforests and arid cactus gardens all within walking distance from each other.

Shrine of Remembrance

Adjacent to the Royal Botanic Gardens you shouldn't miss a visit to the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne for many reasons. One is definitely a stunning Instagram photo, the other is culture and beauty. The upper balconies have sweeping views of Melbourne and personally, I think the best spots for a couple of photos.

Brighton Beach Boxes

A little further out, these bathing boxes in Brighton are simply stunning. You have probably seen them all over Instagram as they are quite famous. They were constructed in the Victorian era to protect the modesty of bathers. While that concept is a bit old fashion the boxes have found new life displaying inspiring artwork and stunning paint jobs. Best time of day to visit is during sunset when the sun fades behind the water and lights up the boxes in a classic golden hour show.

At 88 stories high, the 360-degree views of Melbourne are a dream, and perfect for you Instagram. Of course, try to visit on a clear day for the best views. I suggest visiting their website ahead of time to purchase a ticket for entrance to the Skydeck. This helps you beat the line and also saves you money! An adult ticket costs $21, children under 16 are $12.50. The Skydeck is open every day from 10 am to 10 pm with last entry at 9:30 pm.

Top Tip: While it is cool to upgrade your ticket for 'The Edge' experience ($12 for adult upgrade, $8 for children upgrade) you cannot bring your camera in there and have to pay $15 extra for a photo taken by a staff member. That means a total ticket for one adult to enter the Skydeck, experience 'The Edge', and get a photo is $48. Pretty steep.

Admission cost for the Eureka Skydeck in Melbourne are pretty high.

What is ‘The Edge’ experience at Eureka Skydeck? A unique glass cube - complete with glass walls, ceiling, and floor - stretches out from the 88th floor and hangs you over Melbourne. The experience may be dizzying but if you do fork out the cash the picture will be incredible!

Rooftop Cafes & Bars

There are quite a few great rooftop bars in Melbourne where you can enjoy the weather, sip a cocktail, and grab a great Instagram photo. Some great ones to try out include Rooftop Bar on the seventh story of Curtain House (Swanston Street), Naked in the Sky (Fitzroy), The Rooftop at QT Melbourne (Russell Street), The Emerson Rooftop (South Yarra), and Loop Roof (Meyers Place).

Ponyfish Island

You really can't go wrong with a photo along the Yarra River in Melbourne, but stop at Ponyfish Island for a memorable Instagram photo. The floating bar has incredible views of the city and is also a great spot to stop for some phenomenal lunch items like cheese plates and sandwiches.

Final Thoughts

Planning a trip to Australia in general, can be overwhelming. Everyone has an opinion on this beautiful location and you may be frozen and unable to plan anything. Rest assured that no matter what you choose to do in Australia or where you choose to stay in Australia you're going to have a beautiful time.

One last thing... even though researching ahead of time is great, I definitely recommend bringing an Australian travel guide along with you. Here are some of the travel guides I used during my trip...

Also, a super common question I get is: What camera do I use for my travels. The body is a Nikon D5600 and I use the kit lens and a Sigma wide-angle lens which I am genuinely obsessed with.

My full list of travel gear, that I take on every trip can be found here.

And of course, if you have any questions DO NOT hesitate to reach out to me via Instagram, Twitter, or just shoot me an email (tessajuliette at gmail dot com).
