Driving to La Cusinga Eco Lodge
If you are coming from San Jose the drive is very easy, the lodge is located right off of Route 34. There are many signs as you are driving in both directions warning you are approaching the eco lodge. Once you turn off onto the private dirt road it is a short distance to reception parking. Easily accessible with a standard car.
The road to La Cusinga Eco Lodge in Uvita is long, especially if you are coming from San Jose. If you are driving straight from the airport be prepared to leave early and know that times can vary depending on what sort of traffic you hit.
Checking into La Cusinga Eco Lodge
The check in reception is a small cabin that is rustic and cozy. One of the lovely staff members will give you a full rundown of the onsite trails and excursions that La Cusinga offers. They will also explain how to book spa packages and when meals are.
The Rooms at La Cusinga Eco Lodge
Each cabin is outfitted with a comfy bed, extra sheets, a sink, toilet and full shower. The shower, although rustic, is quite nice with excellent water pressure and plenty of hot water.
I personally stayed in the room pictured above but they have many combinations available. There are a wide variety of rooms including a honeymoon suites (one king bed) to family rooms (2 queen bed and a twin). They also have a couple of rooms available that feature bunk beds ($95 per bed).
Wifi at La Cusinga Eco Lodge
Wifi is only available in the lookout center and the restaurant. There is no wifi in the rooms. Although this is a bit inconvenient it is nice as it forces the entirety of guests at the small hotel to all congregate together. Some of my best memories of my stay were conversing with the fellow travelers. If I had wifi in my cabin I fear I wouldn’t have spent as much time around them.
Dining at La Cusinga Eco Lodge
Everything I ate at Aracari was delicious and the views from the restaurant are fantastic! They only use fresh, local and organic ingredients. Breakfast is included with reservations; lunch and dinner are a la carte but are fairly priced. Sandwiches between $10-$12 and mains between $15-$18. All of the food comes in big portions that can easily be shared or saved for later.
Coffee and granola/cereal is available for the early risers starting at 6am. Breakfast is served from 7-9am. Lunch is 12-2pm. Dinner is 6-9pm.
Onsite extras at La Cusinga Eco Lodge
The many private trails are a huge draw to staying at La Cusinga. My favorite was the path to private beach - seriously amazing!! The map states it as one mile but the walk only took me about 10-15 minutes. There are also trails to the rocky beach, which wind through the jungle where wildlife is abundant.
I absolutely loved the lookout lodge. It was incredibly relaxing, especially in the morning with fresh coffee and their bird watching scope. Their staff members are extremely knowledgeable about the wildlife in the area. One morning a staff member alerted us to a family of monkeys eating morning fruit on the tree above one of the main paths. What an experience!
There is also a spa onsite – be sure to book ahead of time. The yoga center is perfect for morning meditation. Additionally, La Cusinga can arrange any excursion you wish to participate in.
