Hong island is technically four islands called the Koh Hong group. Located off the coast of Krabi they are generally referred to as Hong Island and Hong Lagoon. They are widely considered the most beautiful islands in the region.
Where is Hong Island located?
Hong island is right off the coast of Krabi. It is easily accessibly from Ao Nang Beach.
How to get to Hong Island
Hong islands can be reached in 20 minutes by speed boat or 45 minutes by long tail boat. You can reach the island group from the beaches surrounding Krabi or from Phuket.
If you are leaving from Krabi, as we did, there is a small window to buy tickets to the surrounding islands.
Are there tours to Hong Island?
Of course! There are so many tours available to spend a day on Hong Island. Many of them combine the island with a couple of other stops. The most popular ones include going to Hong Lagoon. Don't worry about booking a tour ahead of time. There are tons of boats available all day to take you there and back.
Renting a private long tail boat
If you're feeling especially fancy, I would suggest renting a long tail boat for the day. The cost is between $80-$100...make sure you negotiate the price beforehand. When you have a boat for the day you can dictate what islands you want to go to and how long you want to stay.
Matt and I did this when we went to Hong Island. We stayed in the lagoon for such a long time and watched as tour after tour only did a brief lap around the lagoon before heading out.
On Hong Island
Once you land on the main beach in Hong Island you will pay the national park fee of 200 baht per person. The beach has a walking trail and a large area to relax in the sun. Head there early if you want to enjoy it while it's empty. It fills up fast!
The main beach has beautiful yellow fish in the shallow water. There are also hammocks to relax in on the beach.
Around the corner from the beach is Hong Lagoon. Your boat will enter through a small opening in the rocks. Once inside, it is completely sheltered from the wind making the water silky and smooth.
Where to stay in Krabi
I visited Hong island while staying in Krabi. I thought it was the perfect starting point to island hop all day. Another favorite of mine was Poda Island which is conveniently right off the coast of Krabi.
If you want to stay in Krabi here are some hotels I recommend:
Anyway you frame it a day to Hong island is going to be incredible. Make sure you relax, you're in Thailand after all!
One last thing... even though researching ahead of time is great, I definitely recommend bringing a guidebook along with you. I am a big fan of lonely planet guides.
