Driving to El Castillo

To get to El Castillo from San Jose you will take Route 34. The road is paved up until the turnoff on Calle Perezoso where it turns into a windy, and at times steep, dirt road. Luckily El Castillo isn’t too far from the initial turnoff. The hardest part was honestly the driveway, which was incredibly steep, but my standard rental car made it up just fine. If you are worried about the driveway you could leave your car at the bottom and walk up to the entrance. A 4 wheel drive car would be best, but again my standard tiny car made the journey just fine. By the way, I definitely recommend a 4 wheel drive or 4x4 car for a rental – more about what kind of car to rent here.

Driving from San Jose to El Castillo is a long journey but easy due to paved roads. The entire trip takes around 3-4 hours. If you are driving straight from the airport be prepared to leave early and know that times can vary depending on what sort of traffic you hit.

Is El Castillo a good hotel in Costa Rica? YES! and you should definitely stay there. Tessa Juliette - Travel Where to Next http://travelwheretonext.com

Checking into El Castillo

Checking into El Castillo was a worry free process. It is a small, but beautiful, hotel and that keeps everything very extremely easy. I was welcomed with a tasty drink, while an employee took my luggage to my room and moved my car for me.

Your first impressions will likely be similar to mind; awe inspiring. Their view from the rock cliff edge looks out over an infinity pool to a close-by bay. I arrived near sunset and immediately thought I had reached the ultimate paradise.

The Room at El Castillo

All the rooms at El Castillo are suites, that are beautifully decorated and inviting. The rooms have an A/C unit that cools the large suites down extremely well. The bathrooms are all exquisitely done in stone with huge showers. You can choose from one of their five ocean view suites, a garden room or the owners suite. I had room #5 (ocean view) and while the room was amazing my favorite part was the balcony overlooking the pool and bay.

Wifi at El Castillo

Wifi at El Castillo is very easy to access with great speeds throughout the hotel and inside the rooms. I had no trouble connecting while on the property.

Dining at El Castillo
Azul Mediterranean Restaurant and Bar

One of the best hotels in Costa Rica, El Castillo has amazing views for breakfast. Tessa Juliette - Travel Where to Next http://travelwheretonext.com

Azul is their dining space right off the main entrance. A bit pricy but an excellent meal considering the views you get with it. Even if you end up staying elsewhere I highly recommend enjoying sunset on the property and then staying for a quiet relaxing dinner.

While staying at El Castillo I had dinner and breakfast at Azul, dinner was seriously fantastic! I enjoyed the fresh fish in a saffron sauce with mashed potatoes and veggies. Although it sounds simple it was beautifully prepared. The menu includes pasta, meat, salads and lighter options. Dinner entrees are priced between $15-25.

Breakfast is included with the room. You have options between Typical or American. The typical breakfast (pictured above) was more than enough food. I ended up packing the rest for lunch later that day. Coffee is available starting at 6 am.

Onsite extras at El Castillo

The staff at El Castillo can help you arrange any excursion you wish to visit in the area. They also can arrange for massages in your room. The pool and cabanas are the main draw. I am awful at sitting and relaxing while traveling but spent a fair bit of the morning in the pool. The view is just too good!

Final Thoughts for El Castillo in Ojochal Costa Rica

A beautiful property & friendly service that is well worth the price. I would recommend staying here if you want a relaxing vacation, especially one lounging by the pool. El Castillo is one of the best boutique hotel options in Ojochal Costa Rica.
